When These Symbols Are Used

Good typography distinguishes a hyphen, en dash, em dash, and mathematical minus sign. Curly quotation marks belong in polished prose, while straight quotes are usually safer in code. Legal, academic, and editorial marks such as §, ¶, †, and ‡ have specific conventions.

Copying is usually the fastest method on phones and tablets. On desktop computers, the individual guides explain Windows Alt codes where available, Word Alt+X, macOS Character Viewer, Linux Unicode entry, HTML character references, and Unicode code points.
